Performing the Museum

The international project Performing the Museum was conceived in cooperation between five partner organisations: Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, the Antoni Tapies Foundation from Barcelona, Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina from Novi Sad and the Koroška galerija likovnih umetnosti. The two-year project, co-funded in the framework of the Creative Europe programme, focused on the role of art museums in contemporary society and was meant to investigate the resources of the participating institutions in order to show that the museum is no longer an institution that only holds, studies and exhibits artworks, but also and above all cooperates with the audience. The project therefore developed a combination of exhibitions, educational programmes and activities based on a cooperative approach, the creation of knowledge and the introduction of new models of mediating art.

In the framework of the project, each of the partner organisations carried out not only exhibition projects but also several workshops and seminars. All four organisations invited interpreters, artists, theoreticians and curators to cooperate in the project and develop projects or artworks on the mentioned topics. The individual projects are thus not only critical readings of the institutions’ resources, but present a new way of the institutions facing their own position and conveying their content to the public.

At the exhibition mounted in the framework of the project, the KGLU presented Barbara Steiner’s project Henry Moore Comes Back and works by Nika Autor (SLO), Vadim Fishkin (RU/SLO), Tadej Pogačar (SLO), Isa Rosenberger (A) and the collective ŠKART (RS). The exhibition was divided into several segments, within which the creators of individual projects questioned the past, the present and the future of the institution. (Suorce: KGLU; look also EC)
