Pariahs – Performing Europe’s Historical Memory

“Pariahs: Performing Europe’s Historical Memory” is an interdisciplinary, creative project that uses community activities and artistic practices to uncover unspoken and collective community memories of marginalized individuals who inadvertently shaped these communities and gradually created historical memory.

Inspired by Filippos Koutsaftis’ documentary Agelastos Petra (Eleusis 2000), which takes a poignant look back at the life of Panagiotis Farmakis, a marginalized figure whose decades-long collection of archaeological treasures inadvertently contributed to the modern shaping of Eleusis, which is currently European Capital of Culture (ECC) in 2023. Farmakis’ image has become anchored in the local consciousness and is part of the collective memory of the city and its history.

The project brings together four cultural organizations from culturally diverse regions (Armenia, Greece, Slovenia and France). Using different artistic approaches (performing arts, music, visual arts, writing and dance), they will explore and get to know the historical memories of each community.

The project starts in Elevzina, Greece and then travels through three more European countries, led by local organizations in Yerevan and rural Armenia, Maribor in Slovenia and Mont-Dauphin in France – four cities with very different socio-cultural backgrounds.

The first step is artistic research, in which each community will be individually involved in a group discussion lasting several hours, which will be led by researcher dr. Effie Samara from the University of Glasgow. In the research, she will discover and record collective and historical memories. After this preliminary step, multidisciplinary artists from the partner countries will participate in mobility and residencies, where they will interact with each other and with local audiences and incorporate local elements and other artistic practices into their productions. They will reveal common patterns of constructing local, national and European identities through artistic expression and performance of the unspoken and unrecorded historical memories of communities that have shaped their progress and socio-cultural environment.

The central goal of the project is to create a methodology that will use artistic practices to discover common and historical memory while weaving a new network of transnational cooperation. The Slovenian partner – Jasa Association – will create a picture book in the project about a hero who finds it difficult to find his place under the sun because of his uniqueness…
