Story: True story. 15 March 1921. A man shoots former Turkish leader and Interior Minister, Talaat Pasha, in the street in the middle of Berlin, in front of many witnesses. He waits until he is arrested and declares, “It is he who is the murderer, not me.” The trial attracts the interest of the world. The New York Times describes it as “one of the most picturesque and sensational Berlin trials in recent years, but essentially a struggle between the massacred Armenian people against the Turkish and German warlords who committed and authorised the massacres.” On the night after the verdict, four people gather in Berlin’s famous Romanisches Café, but they have different views on the crime and the (what seemed to be: positive) denouement that followed. Through the eyes of Lola, a court witness, we return to the two-day Berlin trial. This opened memories of great human pain and unparalleled barbaric cruelty, for never before had they been brought so unbearably close to the eyes of the world.
