Architecture With an Approach to Regeneration and Empowerment (AWARE)

At the Museum of Architecture and Design, we have launched the AWARE project, through which we aim to contribute to the search for identity and a deeper understanding of the places we inhabit. Through the project, we will explore ways to address the general lack of awareness of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage, as well as the role of architects in society. The project’s goal is to create a pilot experience in which a new generation of architects will take on a central role in re-examining the relationship between places, their inhabitants and architecture.

The project brings together three partner organisations in the field of architecture – the Foundation of the Order of Architects in Milan (FOAMI), the Estonian Association of Architects in Tallinn (EAA), and the Museum of Architecture and Design. Based on neighbourhood mapping carried out during the project’s first phase, we will develop and test innovative cultural experiences that reinterpret the spaces and architecture of selected neighbourhoods. Young architects, cultural actors, and local residents will play a key role in this process. New interpretations of urban and social spaces will open up new ways of understanding spatial transformations, strengthen awareness of the value of modern and contemporary architectural heritage, and foster a sense of belonging to places. The multidisciplinary production approach will combine the fields of architecture, culture, and sociology, as well as different forms of expression.

The first phase of the project concluded with the selection of a group of architects who will lead the process. The group was selected through an invited competition. Following consultations with the jury, all seven invited architects were selected (Blaž Zupančič, Ela Grasselli, Gal Grubovšek, Iza Oblak, Lenart Berdon, Saša Smolej, and Tilen Šmid). The group will be led by Professor Gašper Medvešek, who teaches Planning, Architecture of creative thinking and History and Theory of architecture at the Faculty of Architecture.

The Museum of Architecture and Design participates in the project as one of the leading partners. Through the project, the museum will further deepen and expand the research and work it has carried out over past decades. The project is also partly connected to the Museum in the Community programme, which is based on cross-sector collaboration and community involvement.
