Transition to 8: European societies in flux

How does the human body react to stimuli derived from collective social issues? How is technology used to convert biometric data into audiovisual elements, which will constitute raw material for influential artistic productions? How do communities in different locations in Europe experience air pollution and its effects?

Transition to 8: European societies in flux (TT8) is an innovative project that integrates social sciences, technology, and contemporary art, through participatory cultural activities, aiming to raise awareness and mobilise large social groups on the effects of air pollution and its social dimensions. The project actively engages local communities through participatory activities such as bodystorming and sociodrama sessions, where we investigate how communities collectively experience pressing issues in their cities, such as air pollution and its effects. Biometric data from participants’ physical and emotional reactions are collected during the sessions through wearable sensors, and converted into audiovisual elements, which are then given to electronic music and digital artists, as source material, to create original artworks. The produced artworks are then presented in a variety of showcase events.

Implemented in Greece, France, Slovenia and Armenia, TT8 aims to establish innovative artistic expressions that will encourage large social groups to identify their commonalities and increase awareness of critical social issues impacted by air pollution effects and localised environmental challenges. The project includes community research on air pollution in three pilot cities (Eleusis – Greece, Ljubljana – Slovenia, Rennes – France), a capacity building programme, an artist mobility and residency programme and showcase events in all participating countries.
