PS4Her: Public Space 4 Her

Recent urban and gender studies on the topic of public space have often focused the discussion on topics of safety, sanitation, and visibility, not yet considering aspects connected to creative self-expression and political life. This proposal addresses the problem at its very genesis, examining the topic of public space through the empowerment of girls to co-design and co-produce public space. PS4Her proposes the foundation of a co-creative platform run by 3 female associations and supported by an external board of advisors, to investigate the needs, desires, and creativity of girls to co-design and co-produce public space. The identification of a repository of completed and ongoing projects will allow the platform to build upon existing knowledge, spotting a gap in the field, nurtured by a workshop with the board of advisors in year one. Following this kick-off, one pilot project per year will give agency to girls, empowering them to take an active role in the design and production of public space. The output of the three workshops that will take place in Brussels, Ljubljana and Nicosia will be playful urban interventions, co-constructed by the participants, which will be inaugurated annually on the International Day of the Girl Child. The 3 pilots will bring up the production of an action plan that can be applied elsewhere. To generate impact, the project proposes to develop awareness and change mentality on the topic, engaging European policymakers, and local governments in a public dialogue. Therefore, the output will be disseminated through a mobile exhibition and a published toolkit. Additionally, the platform will participate in international conferences and exhibit the work (e.g. the New European Bauhaus festival…). The involvement of the board of advisors that have positions within institutions, city councils or other policy making establishments, will assure the transmission of the outputs to a large public.
