Open House Europe (OHEu)

The architecture festival Open House Slovenia taking place from 12 to 14 April 2024 highlights inclusivity of all people and interest groups in the built and designed spaces.

Open House Europe is a project that aims to encourage a more inclusive debate on architecture as a common European identity, bring the values of quality spaces closer to the general public and empower citizens to advocate for a well-designed built environment. The project, coordinated by Architektūros fondas from Vilnius, Lithuania, includes partner organizations from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Open House Europe joins and builds on twelve local Open House events, which are weekend-long festivals where important buildings in the city open their doors for free guided tours and often include lectures, discussions, exhibitions and other activities. Local festivals offer diverse and free direct experiences of architecture and provide the public with a unique opportunity to engage with the built environment, while Open House Europe joint activities and coordinated themes will promote accessibility and create interactive tools to reveal the role of architecture as part of European identity. As part of the annual topics, good practices will be shown on how architecture can respond to contemporary environmental and social challenges.

The three-year project will focus on a different area each year: 2023 sustainability, 2024 accessibility and inclusion, and 2025 future heritage. These thematic axes will enable Open House Europe to create a starting point for discussing contemporary and heritage architecture, its values and quality. The Open House Europe program will present a range of new activities and events that will be organized across the continent. It will include annual sessions in various European cities, a volunteer exchange program, open calls for visual stories, a digital platform, app development and many innovations at local Open House festivals.

The final goals of the project are the introduction of collaborative methods of knowledge exchange, transfer of good practices between project partners, strengthening of the position of participating architectural cultural organizations, promotion of education and awareness of exceptional examples of architecture and urban environments, inclusion and development of the audience and better accessibility of culture.
