Open Atelier – building new innovative formats for active audience participation and interaction with cultural heritage within European House Museums

Open Atelier – building new innovative formats for active audience participation and interaction with cultural heritage within European House Museums is an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral network of 4 European House Museums, 1 creative performance organisation, and 2 universities, with an overall goal of enhancing the capacity of museum professionals in relation to audience engagement.The aim is to create new ways to actively engage audiences in the way cultural heritage is explored, interpreted, mediated, presented, and used to examine contemporary issues. This by taking into account digital possibilities, as well as lessons learned during COVID-19. Open Atelier will take point of departure in the concept of the Atelier, the artist’s private workroom, but will innovate the use, understanding and engagement with that space, by opening up its doors to the audience. Open Atelier will transform use of the atelier space into an “experience lab”; an interactive, co-creative, dynamic and participatory space, where cultural heritage is point of departure for new interactions and experiences between the audience and the museum and its professionals. To do so, Open Atelier will develop the 9 Open Atelier Formats which will consist of innovative, operative blueprints for new audience-centered participatory museum experiences. Through a workshop-based approach built on interdisciplinary collaboration, and co-creative processes, the partners will design, develop, implement, experiment, test, and evaluate the 9 Open Atelier Formats. This process will result in the facilitation of two Open Atelier Experiences at each partner museum as well as a Digital Youth Competition. Importantly, all major project results will be collected into the Open Atelier Manual which will be disseminated to relevant stakeholders to support the future exploitation and benefit from the Open Atelier Formats. This will secure the sustainability of the results and ensure that the Open Atelier project can have significant long-term impact on other museums, as well as to other cultural and creative organisations and contexts.
