Moving Balkans

Moving Balkans – the Regional Contemporary Dance Platform is a collaboration of dance professionals (presenters, dance houses, experts and promoters) from the geographical Balkans aiming to advance the contemporary dance in the region and to make it competitive within the European context through a long-term regional partnership network, activities that increase artist mobility, co-creations, empowerment of the region’s dance professionals and operators through capacity building and awareness raising. With 11 partners and 7 regional associate partners, the project covers a vast geographic area of the Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Türkiye).

The MovingBalkans is initiated in the moment when the regional cooperation is reinforced (and more than ever necessary) across several other sectors, where efforts for reconciliation have been ongoing and slow and tensions are again on the rise in the Balkans amidst the war in Ukraine, post-Covid and other economic impacts. Its intent is to activate a series of actions over 36-months period to build up, amplify and expand the reach of achievements to date and to use the expertise and experiences of more mature pan European networks and festivals/national service providers (European Dancehouse Network, Aerowaves, Pan-Andria, French Institute, Goethe Institute, Bureau Ritter gUG, MasDanza, IceHot Nordic Platform) to inspire, learn from and implement best practices. Through curated showcases/festivals, series of workshops, the Exchange Programme, co-productions and touring of works (including VR and slow touring) underpinned by audience building initiatives and dynamic communications and marketing actions, we aim to strengthen connectivity of operators in the Balkan region, raise awareness for contemporary practices amongst local/regional audiences and European markets.
