DoSEL – Drama of Smaller European Languages

The project Drama of smaller European languages (DoSEL) will make a substantial contribution to safeguarding the cultural and linguistic diversity in the European cultural space, specifically in the drama and theatre sector, by improving the conditions for transnational creation, translation and performance of European drama, written in smaller European languages.

The DoSEL project will close the gap in the up-to-date initiatives which addressed the transnationalisation of European playwrighting without regards for the special needs of the smaller European languages for ‘promotion and protection’. Second, the project bridges the gap between the mere production of translations to actual staging of plays to broad international audiences. Finally, the DoSEL project introduces novel theatre translation approaches to improve the artistic quality of drama in translation.

Upon completion, the DoSEL project will result in the creation of 24 first-time translations of dramatic texts, originally written in Slovene, Maltese, Catalan, Basque, Croatian, Estonian, Albanian and Bulgarian, 8 presentations of European drama outside of their countries of origin, and in over 200 translational mobilities of European artists and European cultural workers. The artistic activities, aimed at facilitating transnational circulation of European artists and works, will be further augmented with an effective communication and dissemination program to extend the project insights and outputs to the widest possible circle of European and global audiences and theatre practitioners.

The DoSEL project is the continuation of the work initiated in 2021 in the scope of a European Theatre Convention development grant, awarded to the consortium of Prešeren Theatre Kranj (Slovenia), National Agency for the Performing Arts (Malta) and the Slovak National Theatre (Slovakia). The DoSEL project consortium has in the meanwhile expanded to include a number of prominent European smaller language drama and theatre stakeholders, including the Arriage Teatre (Spain), Sala Beckett (Spain), Croatian National Theatre (Croatia), Estonian Theatre Agency (Estonia), National Theatre of Kosovo (Kosovo) and the “Ivan Vazov” Theatre (Bulgaria) who propose to implement the DoSEL project with a view to permanently changing the structural conditions in European drama and theatre sector to ensure access to European drama and theatre in smaller European languages to widest European and international audiences.
