ARTAS – Art Archives Study.

In this project the main art archives for contemporary art in Slovenia, Czechia and Austria intend to engage in collaborative research by concentrating on a specific timeframe and avenues of investigations based on their archives and inventories, to read the results as seismographs of social changes in the field of art after and throughout the year 2004. This project takes the year 2004 where 10 countries joined the EU as the starting point for an investigation on the cultural impact of artistic mobility and transnational art exchange. In a collaborative project, the three partner institutions aim to study the impact of this historical moment in European history based on the material evidence and data saved and collected in their archives. All three archives have set themselves the task of documenting contemporary art production and reception in their respective countries for many decades. In addition to physical archives, they maintain online databases which not only serve as catalogue for the physical holdings, but offer a wide range of information on persons, institutions and exhibition, based on data gathered from the physical sources. Combined the three databases contain entries on more than 220.000 exhibitions and 205.000 persons. By concentrating on specific exhibition events, personal biographies and mobility that serve to reflect the special quality of the chosen timeframe, a deeper analysis and comparison of events and developments will be made, processing and visualizing the corresponding materials and data, gathering and creating new archival materials by oral history interviews and archival research. This study is intended to improve the professional cooperation between contemporary art archives and allows conclusions to be drawn that show how and whether exchanges have altered after 2004. The results will be presented at an international conference in autumn 2024, exactly 20 years after this historical expansion. [Source: FTOP]
