36th and 37th Edition of the Ljubljana International Film Festival (Slovenia)

Ljubljana International Film Festival (LIFFe) celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2024 and after all these years remains the largest (international) film festival in Slovenia, each edition introducing between 100-120 art films, mostly non-commercial, of all types, genre and formats, while the festival continually attracts a great number of spectators (between 35.000 and 40.000 of loyal visitors every year).

Traditionally, LIFFe offers a relevant overview of current worldwide cinematography, every year it includes films awarded at the biggest films festivals (Cannes, Rotterdam, Berlin, Locarno, Venice, etc.), but with one crucial addition, the competition section, Perspectives, that consists of ten films, which were directed as respected director’s first or second feature, mostly including young authors nominated for the Kingfisher award, and with it the festival aims to present new authors and new cinematography. Of course, every year also has various program slots (exclusively) dedicated to presenting old masters, cinematographic curiosities, and well-known names of the world cinema.

In all the years, LIFFe’s main ambition remains the same – to illustrate the progress and continuity of film as an important art form, to develop the public’s appreciation of European films and their authors, to present films of young/new directors with a peculiar attention towards upcoming talents and a special highlight and training activities on-site in order to give them support in winning recognition in local territory and wider through distribution (during the year), and to offer a platform for the participation of the professional community and activities aimed towards the industry representatives.
