Novel Europe (NovelEU)

The Novel Europe project goal is to improve the presence and circulation of high-quality European novels in Slovenia. Our goal is to translate, publish, distribute and promote 12 outstanding novels, written in 12 European languages, 8 of them in lesser-used European languages. The books have been carefully selected according to the highest artistic criteria and the Slovenian market needs. They each follow the trajectories of key contemporary European dilemmas (borders, conflicts, deconstruction of society, environmental concerns, marginalized groups) that have been addressed time and again. They also include a Ukrainian title, which will be the base for working with Ukrainian refugees at Slovenian high schools, universities and in the community.

The project’s activities will result in 12 new book publications, 11 new eBooks and 12 new audio books. Of the 12 works, 9 will be translated for the first time, the 3 remaining titles (Balzac, Deledda, Andrić) haven’t been on the Slovenian market for over 50 years and in outdated or even damaging translations. The project will significantly improve access to high-quality European fiction for the Slovenian audience.

The project has been designed with strong digital and ecological elements and was prepared with the involvement of over 20 relevant national partners from different fields (The Students’ Organisation of Slovenia, ŠOU, national transport operators, The National Council of Disability Organizations of Slovenia, national literary festivals and book fairs) with the common aim of counteracting the alarming trends in reading habits among the younger population (15-18 and 19-29 years). Furthermore, an essential part of the project is designed for younger readers with impairments. It will be carefully monitored and will serve as a case study, at the European level, for innovations into the use of literature in bibliotheraphy, as well as how to enable accessibility to contemporary novels for people with impairments.
